Membrane Switches
Membrane switches are a thin (<1 mm) durable form of momentary switching that is commonly used throughout industry.
In it’s simplest form membrane switches are made up of two flexible printed circuits, physically separated by a spacer. When the button is pressed, holes in the spacer allow the two circuits to contact completing the circuit. The printed top layer is known as the graphic overlay. It is normally made of clear polyester, and reverse printed to protect the image from wear, solvents, and abrasion.
Membrane switches have a number of advantages over other forms of switching. You should consider them when:
- You want a thin switch
- You want an attractive and durable visual interface
- Your PCB is remote from the interface
- You want a durable seal to the environment
